Rhode Island - Militia List (1777)
This data set is an index to the 1777 census of Rhode Island. This census contained only the names of males 16 years of
age and upwards. Its results were used for military purposes. The towns of Exeter, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport,
New Shoreham and Portsmouth are not included in the census. About these missing towns the State Record Commissioner of
1916 wrote, "undoubtedly this was due to the occupation of the British." Information contained in this index includes
name of male, district or county under which he is enumerated, the state, page number where he will be found in the
original records, and the area (township, city, valley, basin, or other area) under which he is enumerated. It is
important to use the information found in this index to locate your ancestor in the original records as original
records usually contain more information than do their indexes. The originals are located at the National Archives in
Washington, D.C. A microfilmed copy of the manuscript held at the National Archives is available from the Family History
Library in Salt Lake City, Utah (film # 947359 Item 2). Another copy of this record, transcribed by Mildred M. Chamberlain,
was published by Genealogical Publishing Co. in 1985 and is available in many libraries.
