I grew up believing that our surname was \”Binger\”. With a whole lot more research and documents written in my great-grandfather\’s excellent hand-writing, we have discovered that we came to this country as \”Bünger\”. I have also discovered that great-grandfather was in the Prussian Navy at the age of 12, along with his 7 years older brother, Henrich, and both boys were born in the town of Brumenthal. It was my grandfather, when he left home with his older brother, Henry, who eventually dropped the \’ü\’ in favor of a single \’i\’. Most American\’s had already claimed our name was really spelled as \”Biinger\”, then to \”Binger\”.
