VRANIK

Anonymous asked 10 years ago

My VRANIK family originated in Lissza, Hungary, (today known as Lysa' pod Maytou, Slovakia) and are of Slovak ethnicity. To my knowledge, only two VRANIK families from Lysa' immigrated to USA. They settled in Milwaukee County, WI. Surprisingly, the two families were not related (at least back to early 1700's), but they lived near each other in the same towns & married into same families. One family kept the spelling, the other family changed the spelling to WRANIK when they applied for naturalization. I'm not sure why, since there is no “W” in their Slovak alphabet. There is another spelling of VRANEK, but they are usually Bohemian from today's Czech Republic. Those that spell it WRANIK and it was always spelled WRANIK, are usually of Polish or German descent.
