The Marriage Index: Louisiana, 1718–1925 contains approximately 285,000 marriage records from 58 selected parishes across the state. These records span more than two centuries, beginning as early as 1718 in St. Helena Parish. However, there are gaps in the collection—specifically for the years 1719–1727 and 1729–1733.

After 1734, marriage documentation became more consistent, although widespread record-keeping did not gain momentum until the mid-20th century. Most entries in the index were compiled from original courthouse marriage records.

It’s worth noting that the index is not exhaustive. While it offers a significant starting point for researchers, some parishes may have incomplete or missing entries for certain years. Nonetheless, this collection remains a valuable resource for those tracing Louisiana ancestors or exploring the state’s early history through matrimonial records.
