The Roll of Honor is one of the most important collections of Civil War records for Union soldiers. Published beginning in 1866 by the U.S. Quartermaster General’s Office, these volumes document the names of Union soldiers who died during the conflict between 1861 and 1865. Each entry typically includes the soldier’s name, rank, regiment, and place of burial.

For genealogists and historians, the Roll of Honor is a vital resource. It preserves the identities of those who gave their lives in service and often provides the only surviving record of their sacrifice. In some cases, the entries also note reinterments when soldiers were moved from battlefield graves to national cemeteries.

Beyond its genealogical value, the Roll of Honor serves as a lasting tribute to the Union dead of the Civil War. It connects descendants and researchers to the human cost of the war while honoring the service and memory of the men who helped preserve the United States.
