The Germans to America Index is a valuable resource that offers a range of details about nearly 2 million German immigrants who came to the United States between 1850 and 1874. This index provides information such as age, gender, job, origin, and when they arrived in the U.S.
The index was put together by editors Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby and was initially released as a book series by Scholarly Resources, Inc. It holds the distinction of being the first detailed, indexed source specifically aimed at immigrants with German last names. The information in this index is drawn from the first 31 volumes of the Germans to America series. There are also additional volumes (Volumes 32–56) that offer similar information about German immigrants who arrived in the U.S. between 1875 and 1888.
One of the standout features of this series is its inclusivity. It doesn’t just focus on individuals from German states or territories. The index also includes information about people who migrated to the United States from other countries, such as France, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.
