The Ontario Register was a privately published periodical that gathered together historical and genealogical records from across Ontario during its earliest days as Upper Canada. Spanning nearly a century, the publication includes transcriptions from church registers, family Bibles, cemetery inscriptions, military rolls, and newspaper announcements—many of which would otherwise be scattered across archives or lost to time.
Compiled in the 1970s and 1980s, this register aimed to preserve and make accessible vital details from the 18th and 19th centuries. It often highlights early settlers, Loyalist families, and the everyday people who built Ontario’s early communities. Though the records come from a variety of sources, each entry offers a small glimpse into life in colonial and post-colonial Canada, long before civil registration became standardized.
Researchers still value The Ontario Register today because it preserves data from fragile or no-longer-extant sources. Whether you have ancestors who lived in Ontario or passed through it on their way to the U.S. or western Canada, this collection captures a remarkable window of time.
