Archibald Perkins was born about 1799, his birth origin is still a mystery. During the census records from 1850 to 1880, it states that he was born in Vermont on one census and then the next census it states that he was born in Canada, throughout researching him it has been very difficult finding out his actual birth location. The first findings of him were in the 1830 census which shows him in Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont along with his wife Nancy Irish, daughter of Zodack Irish, and their four children, one son of five and under the age of 10 and three daughters, one daughter of five and under 10 and two daughters under 5 years of age.
In the 1840 census he is located in Hinesburg, Chittenden Co., Vermont along with his wife, Nancy and eight children, three boys, one son 15 and under 20 and two sons under the age of 5 and five daughters, one 10 and under 15, two 5 and under 10 and two under 5. In the 1850 census, he is located in Oakfield, Fond Du Lac Co., Wisconsin along with his wife, Nancy, and children, Adelaide, Harmon, Norman, Guy, and Albert. The 1850 census states that he was born in Canada, his wife and children all being born in Vermont.
In the 1860 census, he is located in Farmington, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin along with wife Nancy and children Norman, Guy, Albert, and Lucius, (Lucius is more than likely the grandson of Archibald and Nancy) and it states that he was born in Vermont.
In the 1870 census, Archibald is located in Cooper, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan living with is son Albert Perkins and his family. It states that his wife Nancy resides in bed and that he was born in Canada. It is here that we lose any signs of Nancy. It is possible that she died here and her body was returned to Vermont to the family burial plot, but that is only a theory as no record has been found of her death or any verification of burial.
In the 1875 Wisconsin state census, Archibald is located in Union Township, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin, there is a female listed as living with him, but is this is wife Nancy or one of his daughters.
In the 1880 census, Archibald is located in Union Co., Oregon living with his son Harmon A. Perkins and his family and he is 81 years of age and a widower, it also states that he was born in Vermont.
So as you can see it is very difficult to know exactly where he was born and who his parents were.
This was taken from a book and sent to one of the relatives:
Archibald Perkins, born in Vermont in 1799, was married to Nancy Irish in 1822. Born to this union were five girls and five boys. In 1880 at the age of 81, he came to Wallowa County with his son Albert J. Perkins and family, traveling by covered wagon. He and Albert joined another of his sons, Harmon, who had arrived in the county in 1874. Harmon was married to Cornelia Dwinnell, a sister of Albert’s wife. They all settled on Upper Prairie Creek, filing on homesteads. Albert’s land was in Sec 15. Township 3, S Range 45 (later known as the Peal place). Archibald passed away the same year, 1880, and was buried in the Prairie Creek Cemetery. After careful research, it was found he was the first adult buried in this cemetery, being the only Wallowa County Pioneer born before 1800.
